How do brakes work? When you step on the brake pedal, the master cylinder sends fluid under pressure to the brake calipers at each wheel (which hold the brake pads). The caliper presses the brake pad against the brake rotor, causing friction that slows down the car. During normal usage, brake pads wear out and become thinner. If the brake pad thickness is less than 3mm, it is time to change the pads. Depending on where you drive (stop-and-go city driving tends to wear pads out quicker) brake pads usually last between 30,000-35,000 miles. Some vehicles (like BMW’s) are equipped with a low-pad-warning system. In these vehicles, you will also need to replace the brake sensors as part of the brake pad service.
What symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Brake Pads?
Grinding, squealing or screeching noise when you apply brakes.
Brake pedal lower than normal.
Brake or low-pad warning light is on.
Vibration in the steering wheel.
Brake pads are replaced in pairs. This means that if you replace the left front, the right front should also be replaced. This is also the case with the rear brakes.
What is a brake system flush? Over time, brake fluid absorbs air, moisture and becomes contaminated. Air in the brake fluid causes braking to feel spongy and significantly reduces braking efficiency. Moisture vaporizes under the normal heat of braking and causes further spongy, inefficient braking.
When we flush your brake system, we remove all of the old, contaminated fluid and replace it with new, clean, optimally effective fluid; ensuring your car can brake at it's optimum.
